COVID-19 and Other Challenging Contexts for the Comprehensive Protection of Children and Youth

6 am New York
Online
Organizer: Government of Colombia

The year 2020 will be remembered as the year humankind had to face one of the biggest challenges in recent history as a result of both the spread of COVID-19 and the declaration of a global pandemic whose impact has been – and will continue to be – global. Ensuring the comprehensive protection of children and youth against the backdrop of such a disproportionate challenge, raises the need to build capacity to design and implement effective public policy. It further requires that innovation, inter-institutional alignment and cooperation competencies between public, private, non-governmental and multilateral actors be developed.

While as a society we are moving a still-incomplete learning curve forward, the UN General Assembly provides a perfect setting for examining the challenges that have arisen in a highly complex environment, while evaluating proposed approaches based on the experience of different institutional and non-governmental actors.

The Colombian Government has set up this side event designed to encourage constructive discussion to provide proposed solutions whilst contributing to getting back to the path to wellness and social progress that has been threatened by the current emergency.

8 am New York
Online
Organizer: OrganizerPMNCH, White Ribbon Alliance and EWEC

This virtual, highly interactive event held during the 2020 UN General Assembly will focus on securing global accountability for protecting women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health and rights during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

Hosted by The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH), White Ribbon Alliance and Every Woman Every Child, the event will build on outcomes from the recent “Lives in the Balance” COVID-19 summit, and bring together a wide range of stakeholders from governments to grass-roots organizations, people with power to make changes and people calling for those changes to be made.

Led by the Rt Hon Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Chair of PMNCH, and moderated by Mercy Juma of BBC Africa, the event will:

  • Discuss the difference that women’s political leadership makes to public accountability in relation to the pandemic;
  • Present new findings from the 2020 Progress Report on the EWEC Global Strategy for Women's, Children's and Adolescents’ Health;
  • Feature a citizen’s parliament that brings together women’s and girls’ lived experiences, a panel of female community leaders from India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria and the United Kingdom, in dialogue with political leaders for commitments to the Call-to-Action on COVID-19;
  • Unite partners in aligning for action under a new ambitious five-year strategy for PMNCH.

The event will feature moderated chats and live polling and will be available in English, French and Spanish.

The Healing Power of Learning Through Play: Adapting and Scaling Play-Based Early Childhood Development

9:30 am New York
Online
Organizer: BRAC and the Care and Protection for Children (CPC) Learning Network

BRAC and the Care and Protection for Children (CPC) Learning Network at Columbia University invite you to join us for a webinar on BRAC’s Play Lab model, our flagship playful early learning program. The Play Lab is a model for play-based early childhood development that demonstrate the power of play to catalyze learning, healing and resilience in children between 0 – 6 years old living in low-resource and humanitarian settings.

First launched in partnership with The LEGO Foundation in 2015, the Play Labs have reached more than 50,000 children and their caregivers in Bangladesh, Tanzania and Uganda. In 2017, BRAC introduced the Humanitarian Play Lab model in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh as part of the broader response to the Rohingya refugee crisis.

The Humanitarian Play Lab is the contextualized adaptation of the Play Lab with a curriculum based on the Rohingya culture to promote healing and learning by nurturing their own identity. The webinar will showcase the development, implementation and evidence collected from the different iterations of the Play Lab. Speakers will join from BRAC University’s Institute for Educational Development, BRAC International, Columbia University, the LEGO Foundation and Sesame Workshop.
