The parenting ‘vaccine’

Why we like this piece

This is a short and concise commentary promoting a "vaccine" against neglect and abuse in the lives of children. In a note to the editor, the authors connect the increasing rates of violence since the appearance of COVID-19 and the household stress that falls largely on parents’ shoulders. Parenting, as one of the INSPIRE evidence-based interventions to prevent violence, they argue, is a cost-effective and scalable response.

Gender, Power and Progress: How Norms Change

Why we like this piece

This is a cautiously optimistic report (with really great infographics) on gender norm change produced by ODI and ALIGN.

The authors address three big research questions:

Small Voices, Big Dreams

Why We Like This Piece

The Small Voices, Big Dreams Study (2019), produced by the ChildFund Alliance, uses a mix-methods approach to reach nearly 5, 500 girls and boys in 15 countries, providing insight into young peoples’ perceptions of violence. Rather than measuring prevalence or incidence, this study takes a deep dive into children’s perceptions of the violence that surrounds them.

Local & National Knowledge: The DNA of successful implementation

In 2019, Colombia joined the End Violence Partnership as a Pathfinding Country. In 2020 – even in spite of COVID-19 conditions – the Government of Colombia embarked on an ambitious plan to reduce violence against children. The Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF) is the main body overseeing the country’s efforts to build a safer world for children.

ICBF has taken a multi-pronged approach to end violence against children:

2021: A Defining Year for Accelerating Gender Equality, Equity and Justice

8:30 am New York
Online
Organizer: UNFPA

The 7th Annual Symposium on the Role of Religion and Faith-Based Organizations in International Affairs, entitled “2021: A Defining Year for Accelerating Gender Equality, Equity and Justice” will be held virtually 8:00 - 12:30 pm EST/New York on, Tuesday 26th January 2021.

The Symposium will focus on overcoming pervasive gender inequalities and discrimination as an essential contribution to reshaping the world as we recover and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic and to achieving sustainable peace and development. It will explore how faith actors and institutions can work in tandem with governments, the United Nations, and broader civil society to accelerate the pace towards gender equality, equity and justice, presenting directions based on innovative approaches. The Symposium will not shy away from honest appraisal of both the contributions of faith actors to this agenda as well as pointing to where and how they are hindering progress, but will primarily serve as a space to recommit to achieving gender justice, grounded in both faith values and universal human rights, and as part of our commitment to begin a more critical understanding of race, post-colonialism and intersectionality within international development discourse and practice.
