UTTHAN is a non-profit and non-political voluntary organization for social and human rights development. The organization was established on March 25, 2004 in Barisal, a coastal district in the southern part of Bangladesh, with the keen interest of some enterprising social workers. The organization was initially limited to cultural activities, including street child education, prevention of violence against women, smoking and drug prevention campaigns, and other social activities.

The organization has been making progress since 2007 with some specific project-based development activities and administrative structure. The organization is working to implement various activities in the field of human rights and good governance through the promotion of gender equality, education, health and sanitation to ensure the development and empowerment of the living poor and marginalized sections of the society. At present the organization is successfully implementing various development programs in Barisal region.
