So They Can

So They Can is an international non-profit organisation (INGO) driven by the vision to change the future for children living in poverty in East Africa through education. The organisation was founded in Kenya in 2009 in response to the urgent need for support for the more than 600,000 Kenyans who were internally displaced as a result of the 2007 election violence, and forced to live in makeshift tents in Nakuru. From establishing one primary school in Nakuru - Aberdare Ranges Primary School - So They Can has grown exponentially and in 2023 supports 52 government schools in Kenya and Tanzania, across three regions - Manyara in Tanzania; Nakuru and Baringo in Kenya, to empower 28,000 children and their families. Our organisation specialises in access to quality education through Public-Private Partnerships with local governments. Our holistic approach has systematically improved education outcomes for primary and secondary students in underserved school communities through: teacher training and professional development; student health (feeding programs, access to water, prevention of female genital cutting and child marriage to keep girls in school, hygiene and sanitation); development of school boards and management; government partnerships; community and stakeholder engagement; school infrastructure and resources; and quality Early Childhood Development. Our child-centred approach across all of our interlinked projects prioritises child protection and safeguarding through community awareness, protection and safeguarding mechanisms, training and advocacy.
