Railway Children

Railway Children reunifies street-connected children with their families and works to address the issues that led to them leaving in the first place. There are more than 5,000 children on the streets in Tanzania, according to UNICEF's most recent estimate. Many sadly leave home because they face neglect and abuse at the hands of their own parents. Whatever the reason for leaving, violence awaits all of them on the street. Railway Children provides support to thousands of children every year. A recent survey illustrated the scale of the problem; 100% of children we asked have faced at least one form of violence (mental, psychological or sexual) at the hands of abusive adults or other children on the streets. Railway Children works on three levels: on the streets, to provide urgent support to vulnerable children; in the family home, to address the reasons that children left home in the first place; and at Government level, to change legislation and perceptions that impact street-connected children.
