The Breck Foundation

Breck Foundation was founded in 2014 in memory of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old boy who lived in Surrey in the United Kingdom. Breck was groomed by someone he met online, who he believed was a friend, and subsequently murdered. The core need for the Foundation’s work has remained the same ever since - to prevent this tragedy from occurring to another young person, through providing the education, information and guidance desperately needed by so many children, parents and other safeguarding adults. Our mission is to protect young people in the UK from online harm, up to and including the point of saving lives. Accordingly, we raise awareness and increase knowledge among both children and adults – parents, teachers, police and community leaders – regarding the dangers of online grooming, exploitation and abuse, such that these dangers can be quickly and confidently identified, and appropriate action quickly taken. We pursue this primarily through the delivery of interactive presentations on Breck’s story, at schools, colleges, and other venues – we provide vital information that does not feature in the school curriculum. Breck Foundation also engages government, business, tech companies, and other relevant agencies in campaigning for improvements to online safety policies, systems, processes and practices, and particularly to update online policy and law to keep pace with a radically changing digital environment.
